Keen observation skills, intuitiveness, the ability to assume false identities, secretiveness and specialized skill expertise all require a certain level of intelligence. In fact, the CIA’s website states, “Knowledge by non-Agency personnel of your association with the Central Intelligence Agency or the Intelligence Community may limit your ability to perform or preclude you from certain assignments.” Intelligence They can’t reveal their identity or discuss their job, and they certainly can’t post updates on Facebook and Twitter. Special agents must be secretive and maintain confidentiality. Other specialized skills include computer hacking, martial arts, surveillance, impersonations and weapons. Secret agents also need specialized skills, such as mastery of a foreign language, country or culture – especially hard target countries that are difficult to spy on, such as China, Russia and North Korea. They must be convincing in these roles and possess the ability to hide all traces of their own personalities. Often they pretend to be unsavory characters so they can fit in with their targets, or they may pretend to be naïve, would-be-victims. TV shows may offer some insights as well, but take everything fiction-based with a grain of salt.Secret agents must also assume false identities when they’re working undercover. They're fun but unrealistic choose books and websites that detail what real spies actually learn and put into practice. Basing all your spying know-how in James Bond lore won’t get you very far in the real world. Read nonfiction spy and espionage books.The more you know, the more you can follow potential sources of information. That way, when your target says something like, "I just love everything from Picasso's blue period," you can chime in with something pertinent, sustaining the conversation and getting you further with your lead.
It isn't called "gathering intelligence" for nothing! Expand your skill set and become a master of all trades. This is more than just a thinly-veiled reference to the 60s spy TV show - you need to be of superior intellect to actually get any good spying done and done well.
